Nigeria Loses Sports Icon, Nafiu Belo-Osagie

Nigeria’s Sports Icon, who represented his country in the High Jump Event at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, and won Bronze Medal for Nigeria in one of the Commonwealth Games held in Vancouver, Canada, Sr. Apostle Nafiu Belo-Osagie, has passed on. He was 90 years old.

Until his death, Pa Belo-Osagie was the Okaigbe of the famous Oloke family of the Great Benin Kingdom, Edo State of Nigeria.

A statement released by the Oloke Family Organization (USA), signed by Robin Igodan and Uwaila Alonge, President and Secretary General respectively of the organization, said Pa Belo-Osagie passed on in Nigeria during the early hours of Monday February 18, 2019.

An accomplished businessman, late Belo-Osagie was the founder and President of Nosagie Motors in Benin City.

Meanwhile, family members said as painful as his exit at a ripe age 90, they are consoled by the fulfilled and exemplary life he lived.

Late Apostle Nafiu Belo-Osagie is survived by a wife, Mrs. Lucy Belo-Osagie, and 24 children, amongst whom are:

Alhaji Liadi Belo-Osagie (Past president of Oloke Family USA Org); Mr. Wahab Belo-Osagie, (Financial Secretary, Oloke Family USA); Mr. Mustapha Belo-Osagie (USA, Member Oloke Org); Mr. Adams Belo-Osagie (USA, Member Oloke Org); Mr. Rasaki Belo – Osagie (USA, Member Oloke Org); Mr. Busari Belo- Osagie (USA, Member Oloke Org); Ms. Jerusha Belo-Osagie (USA, Member Oloke Org); Mr. Saliu Belo – Osagie (Canada) and Mrs. Isoken Tongo (Nigeria).

According to the statement, funeral arrangements would be announced at a later date.

Apostle Belo-Osagie’s transition is a loss to Nigeria’s Athletic Community; Nigeria in general and the Edo People in particular, the statement added.
