A philanthropist and businessman, Mr. Eze Chukwudi, has donated 30 hospital beds and other medical support equipment to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Edo State, in a move aimed at improving patient care and easing pressure on the public health facility.
The donation, comprising 30 bed frames, 30 Mackintosh mattresses and 30 drip stands, followed Chukwudi’s personal experience at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit during his aunt’s admission.
The Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, expressed gratitude for the gesture , describing it as a pleasant surprise that would address a critical infrastructure need and strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide quality healthcare.
Ize-Iyamu, in a statement, said the timely intervention would directly benefit patients seeking medical attention at the tertiary institution, while complementing government efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
She noted that Chukwudi’s decision to support the hospital after witnessing its needs during his aunt’s hospitalisation demonstrated the importance of private contributions to strengthening public healthcare institutions.
The CMD appealed to other philanthropists, corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the donor by supporting UBTH and other public health facilities in addressing infrastructure and equipment gaps.
Speaking earlier, the donor, Chukwudi explained that his donation was inspired by his experience at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit, which prompted him to contribute towards improving conditions for patients, particularly vulnerable people requiring urgent medical attention.
The donation highlights the potential of individual philanthropy to complement government funding in improving hospital infrastructure and enhancing access to quality healthcare.
