Mental Health: NGO Seeks Awareness Programs In Schools, Workplace

…Urges employers to provide stress-free environment, regular medical checks for workers

As concerns over mental well-being and workplace-related stress continue to draw attention in Nigeria, the Live Care Rehabilitation Initiative has called on the Federal Government and policymakers to introduce mental health awareness programs in schools and workplaces across the country.

The non-governmental organization also urged employers to prioritize workers’ mental health through regular medical examinations, improved communication between management and employees, adequate rest periods and the creation of supportive working environments.

The organization made the call during a rally visit to the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City, Edo State, on Friday, October 9, as part of its activities to mark the 2026 World Mental Health Day.

Speaking on behalf of the organization, its Secretary, Mr. Live Okudu, said mental well-being had become increasingly important in Nigerian society, stressing the need to make conversations about mental health, stress and sleep a normal part of everyday life.

Okudu, who spoke at the event attended by the President of the organization, Mr. Stephen Ojarikre, said the introduction of mental health education in schools and workplaces would help improve awareness, encourage early intervention and reduce the stigma associated with mental health conditions.

He urged Nigerians to adopt healthier lifestyles by engaging in regular physical exercise, eating balanced diets, avoiding tobacco and substance abuse, seeking timely medical screening and using antibiotics only when prescribed appropriately.

The organization also expressed concern over the spread of unverified health information on social media, particularly claims relating to sexual enhancement and performance, calling for greater public vigilance and responsible dissemination of medical information.

According to Okudu, self-care should be treated as an essential component of maintaining good health rather than an act of selfishness, urging Nigerians to pay closer attention to their diets, medication compliance and other preventive health practices.

He noted that while employment could contribute positively to mental well-being, hostile working environments and excessive work-related stress could expose employees to physical and psychological health problems.

To address the situation, he called on employers and managers to conduct periodic medical examinations for their workers, establish effective communication channels between senior and junior staff, and encourage healthy relationships among employees at the same level.

He also recommended designated breaks for meals and refreshments during working hours to reduce fatigue, adding that employers should recognize the importance of rest and create conditions that enable workers to maintain a healthy balance between their professional responsibilities and personal well-being.

On social attitudes towards people experiencing mental health conditions, the organization urged Nigerians to reject discrimination and stigmatization, noting that affected persons deserved dignity, compassion, appropriate treatment and support.
