The Asst. Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 2 Command, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, has assured Nigerians of adequate security ahead of the 2027 elections.
Jimoh says the police are fully prepared and there is no cause for fear.
The AIG gave the assurance, while receiving the 2026 Outstanding Excellence in Security Leadership Award on Monday at the command headquarters.
The award was presented to him by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Integrity Youth Alliance, Abuja, Mr Kehinde Adewole.
Jimoh said the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) had developed a broad-based security plan covering the pre-election period, campaign activities and the conduct of the elections.
According to him, the plan involves intelligence gathering, threat analysis, training and continuous engagement with political parties, candidates, community leaders and other critical stakeholders.
He said Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu had directed Commissioners of Police, Asst. Inspectors-General and Deputy Inspectors-General to ensure adequate security for all stakeholders participating in the electoral process.
“Early training programmes had commenced to equip police personnel with the skills required to discharge their duties professionally during the elections,” he said.
Jimoh said the NPF was also working with state commands through consultative committees on election security, which had been meeting regularly to identify and address potential threats.
“There is no need for anybody to entertain fear. Everything is being put in place to ensure adequate security across the country,” he said.
He said the police would continue to engage critical stakeholders to ensure a level playing field and safety of political party executives, candidates, supporters and other participants during campaign activities.
Jimoh said the NPF would continue to strengthen its security measures and address emerging threats ahead of the elections.
He also said the police were prepared to manage increased human and vehicular movement during festive periods.
According to him, the NPF and other security agencies have intensified supervision and operations to ensure public safety.
‘’The successful security arrangements during major national and international events hosted in the zone demonstrates the police’s capacity to secure large gatherings, ‘’ he said.
He cited the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government Summit as an example of such successful operations.
On public confidence in the police, Jimoh said the force had mechanisms for investigating and sanctioning officers found to have violated the law.
He urged members of the public to report allegations of misconduct through appropriate channels.
“The same law that the citizens are subjected to, the same law that we too are subjected to,” he said.
He urged Nigerians not to allow isolated cases involving individual officers to undermine confidence in the police.
The police boss also cautioned against declaring suspects guilty before the conclusion of investigations and judicial proceedings.
He stressed that, while the police could arrest and investigate suspects, only a competent court of law could determine guilt.
“Everybody that is alleged of an offence should have their day in court,” he said.
Jimoh urged Nigerians to respect due process and allow investigations and court proceedings to run their course.
He reiterated that the police would continue to strengthen their relationship with communities and other stakeholders, while deploying intelligence-led strategies to protect lives and property.
