Reps Give Osinbajo One-week Ultimatum To Swear In Ministers

The House of Representatives is unhappy that two ministerial nominees screened and passed by the Senate have not been inaugurated by the Acting, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The House, on Tuesday, asked Osinbajo to inaugurate the ministers and assign portfolios to them “within one week.”

They are Mr. Stephen Ocheni, a nominee from Kogi State, and Mr. Suleiman Hassan, who was nominated from Gombe State by President Muhammadu Buhari.

They were screened by the Senate in May.

While Ocheni is to replace the late James Ocholi, in the case of Hassan, he is to replace Amina Mohammed, who joined the United Nations last year.

The House passed the resolution following a motion moved by a member from Kogi State, Mr. Karimi Sunday.

Sunday complained that in the case of Kogi, it had been without a minster for nearly two years.

He stated, “These two states are not represented at the Federal Executive Council. This is a breach of the 1999 Constitution. The prayer of this motion is that the Acting President should swear in them in and allocate portfolios to them within one week.”

The resolution was endorsed in a unanimous voice vote.

The session was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Yussuff Lasun.
