Benin City, Nigeria – Following Wednesday September 28, 2016 keenly contested governorship election in Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer has been declared winner of the contest which opposition People’s Democratic Party has rejected as a fraud.
According to the results, released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Obaseki polled 319,483 votes to defeat his opponent, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who received 253,173 votes in an election that was allegedly marred by irregularities, especially grave financial inducements and snatching of ballot boxes.
Meanwhile, aggrieved members and supporters of the People’s Democratic Party continue their protests in Benin City, with heavy security beefed up around the state house, INEC office, major government offices and secretariat of the ruling APC in the state capital.
The State Chairman of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Dan Orbih, while addressing the press in Benin today said his party rejected the outcome of the election which he described as predetermined by the government in power.
At the APC campaign office located along Aiguobasimwin road in the G.R.A, Benin City workers were seen jubilation at the announcement of Obaseki’s victory.
