BREAKING: Lagos Journalist Adegbenro Released From Police Detention Over Alleged Cyberstalking

According to Adenekan’s wife, the police operatives claimed to be from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, but could not provide a reason for the journalist’s midnight “abduction.”

Adegbenro Nurudeen Adenekan, a journalist based in Agege, Lagos, who was arrested earlier on Wednesday at his residence, has been released from police custody at Alagbon, Lagos, Nigeria.

The incident, which sparked concern among residents and media stakeholders in Agege, has now been clarified by Adenekan himself, who spoke to AgegeTV over the phone shortly after his release.

“Though the police came to pick me up this morning, the investigation continues, and everything is under control. Let us be calm, and I will issue a proper statement shortly,” Adenekan said, assuring the public that there was no cause for alarm.

He further debunked circulating reports that he was mishandled during the arrest.

“The police officers were civil and professional in their conduct, contrary to reports by some people that I was rough-handled—there is nothing of such. I want to appreciate everyone for their concern and for all the phone calls, including those from the Nigeria Police Force,” he added.

SaharaReporters earlier on Wednesday reported that Nurudeen Adenekan was whisked away at midnight by operatives of the Nigerian police in a manner suggesting an abduction rather than an arrest.

According to Adenekan’s wife, the police operatives claimed to be from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, but could not provide a reason for the journalist’s midnight “abduction.”

SaharaReporters confirmed on Wednesday morning through a source that Adenekan was arrested on allegations of cyberbullying.

“I just confirmed—he is at the Alagbon police command on allegations of cyberbullying. The wife said the police arrived at their residence in Agege at night, broke into the home, and whisked him away,” the source said.

Adenekan, who is also a lecturer and media consultant, had posted news items on his Facebook page as recently as Tuesday.

He had also posted a news item from Hotnewsnaija.com.ng on Monday before his arrest by the police.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, ASP Aminat Mayegun, said the incident was based on allegations of cyberstalking, bullying, and blackmail targeting the Chairman of Agege Local Government, Ganiyu Egunjobi.

Ms. Mayegun explained that the arrest followed a petition by T.C. Eze Chambers on behalf of Mr. Egunjobi to the AIG, FCID Annex, on June 2, accusing Mr. Adenekan and some unidentified individuals of cyberstalking, bullying, publishing scandalous content, making threats to life, inciting the public, and engaging in conduct likely to cause a breakdown of law and order.

Mayegun later confirmed Adenekan’s release to SaharaReporters.

However, she denied that he was abducted or arrested by FCID operatives, clarifying that he was only invited for questioning in connection with an ongoing investigation.

She said, “Mr. Adegbenro Nurudeen was never abducted or arrested by the FCID as widely reported; he was only invited for questioning.

“A detailed written petition was submitted to the AIG, FCID Annex, on the 2nd of June 2025 by T.C. Eze Chambers, acting on behalf of Chief Ganiu Kola Egunjobi. The petition concerns a case involving cyberstalking, bullying, scandalous publications, threats to life, incitement of the public, and conduct likely to cause a breakdown of law and order.

“The allegations are made against Mr. Adegbenro Nurudeen and other unidentified individuals, who are said to be using various Facebook and Instagram accounts—as well as those operated by their proxies—to malign, scandalize, threaten, and bully Chief Egunjobi.

“It is further stated in the petition that the cyberstalking began after Mr. Adegbenro allegedly approached Chief Egunjobi seeking an appointment as his media assistant, which the Chief declined. Following the escalation of these incidents, the matter was referred to the Public Relations Office, and Mr. Adegbenro was subsequently invited for questioning.”
