Investigators have discovered a trove of details about the gunman who killed Charlie Kirk. But his exact whereabouts remain a mystery.
Authorities have scoured “good video” of the assailant and tracked his movements before and after the killing, the Utah Department of Public Safety commissioner said at a news conference Thursday morning.

The shooter arrived on the Utah Valley University campus at 11:52 a.m. local time Wednesday. He “appears to be of college age” and blended in well on campus, Commissioner Beau Mason said.
The gunman went through stairwells and climbed up to a roof “to a shooting location,” the commissioner said.
“After the shooting, we were able to track his movements as he moved to the other side of the building, jumped off of the building and fled off of the campus and into a neighborhood,” Mason said.
“Our investigators have worked through those neighborhoods, contacting anybody they can with doorbell cameras … and have thoroughly worked through those communities trying to identify any leads.”
Authorities found a “high-powered, bolt action rifle” they believe was the weapon used to shoot Kirk from afar.
The rifle was found in “a wooded area where the shooter had fled,” said Robert Bohls, special agent in charge at the FBI’s Salt Lake City office. He said the FBI will analyze the weapon.
Investigators also collected a footwear impression, a palm print and forearm imprints that will be analyzed, Bohls said.
He tried to quell any fears in the local community, saying the killing “was a targeted event” and “we don’t believe the community is at risk.”
When asked whether the FBI knows the name of the suspect, Bohls declined to say.
Federal officials probe rifle and ammo scrawled with cultural phrases after Charlie Kirk killing
A range of phrases related to cultural issues were found scrawled on a rifle and ammunition found in the woods near where conservative activist Charlie Kirk was murdered on Wednesday, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation.
Authorities are analyzing those messages as they seek to identify a suspect in the killing, sources said, but it’s not yet clear if they point to a motivation in the attack. Among the markings were initials that authorities are seeking to match with suspect profiles, one source said.
Robert Bohls, the FBI special agent in charge of the bureau’s Salt Lake City office, said at a news conference this morning that agents recovered “a high-powered bolt action rifle” in “a wooded area where the shooter had fled.” The FBI laboratory will analyze the weapon, Bohls said.
