Benin City, Nigeria – Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, the Director-General of the Asue Ighodalo/Osarodion Ogie Campaign Council for the Edo State 2024 governorship election, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the party battles Gail of defection amid internal crisis.
In a letter addressed to the PDP Ward 5 Chairman in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the state, the former lawmaker and Commissioner in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) said his resignation was due to recent developments in the party.
While not disclosing his next political destination, he said he wanted to concentrate on his private life and business.
Part of the letter read: “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Ward 5, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State.
“This is a painstaking decision for me, as the PDP has played a vital role in my political journey and personal development.
“For this, I remain deeply grateful and will always cherish the platform the party provided me.
“However, recent developments within the party – both at the state and national levels-have made it difficult for me to remain as a member of the Party.
“The values and principles that once defined the PDP, as laid down by our founding fathers appear to have been eroded.
“What we see today no longer aligns with the vision they had for a truly democratic, all inclusive, and people-centered political party.
“In view of this, I have decided to resign my membership of the Party to enable me concentrate fully on my family and business engagements.
“This is not a decision made out of anger or haste, but one rooted in deep reflection and a sincere desire to preserve my personal values and integrity.
“I sincerely thank the party leadership and all members of Ward 5, Ikpoba-Okha LGA,for their love and support over the years. I wish the PDP well in her future endeavours.”
In a telephone chat with Alltimepost.com Correspondent, Iduoriyekemwen said his next political destination is yet to be decided.
Recall that Iduoriyekemwen told a PDP stakeholders meeting last Monday that the party should not participate in the coming by-elections in the state because of the division within its fold.
In recent time a Gail of resignation and defections has hit the PDP both at the state and National levels amid factions, arising from internal political crisis.
As a result of the crisis in PDP in 2017, Iduoriyekemwen left the party and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In 2020 he left and rejoined the PDP where he was, in 2024 given the assignment to head the Asue Ighodalo/Osarodion Ogie gubernatorial campaign.
Before then, he won the prestigious senatorial ticket of the party in Edo South in 2022 but lost the race to now Senator Neda Imasuen in 2023.
Also, it would be recalled that on Monday July 14, 2025, the chieftain and founding member of the party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubaka resigned his membership and pitched tent with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
At ADC Abubakar is scheming, and spearheading a coalition of opposition political parties that would give him the platform to achieve his long-time presidential ambition against the ruling APC’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Atiku Abukakar, a former Vice President of Nigeria who helped found the party in 1998, cited the party’s departure from its founding principles as a reason for his decision.
According to him, his resignation is with immediate effect as contained in the letter, dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of the PDP in his Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
This latest development with the former Vice President is not the first time, having shuttled multiple times between the PDP, ACN and the ruling All Progressives Congress in the past.
His most recent move marked the third time that he has left the PDP, something that is no longer surprising to the Nigerian political onlookers.
