IGP Warns Policemen Against Unlawful, Prolonged Detention

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has warned all officers of the Nigeria Police Force against unlawful and prolonged detention, particularly in relation to pre-trial detentions.

He said any officer found to have violated constitutional provisions of human rights would face serious consequences.

In a statement released on Sunday, March 23, 2025 by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasized the necessity of adhering to legally prescribed detention periods, noting that this is not just a legal requirement but a fundamental aspect of protecting the dignity and personal liberty of individuals, as enshrined in Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The IGP cautioned against any practices that could lead to unlawful or prolonged detentions, warning that such actions could severely damage public trust in the police force.

“By prioritizing human rights, the Nigeria Police Force aims to build stronger relationships with the communities it serves, ensuring that policing is conducted with integrity and respect”. The statement read.
