Abia To Stop Pension For Ex-governors, Deputies

Former governors and deputy governors hailing from Abia State will no longer be entitled to pension benefits upon the conclusion of their respective tenures.

In a significant move, the Abia House of Assembly passed a bill on Tuesday aimed at halting the disbursement of pensions to former governors and their deputies within the state.

Dubbed the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors (Repeal) Law 2024,” the bill was spearheaded by Honorable Uchanna Okoro, the Majority Leader representing Arochukwu State Constituency.

Following its introduction, the bill swiftly progressed through its readings and considerations within the House, culminating in its passage during the day’s plenary session, as announced by the Speaker, Mr. Emmanuel Emeruwa.

Speaker Emeruwa lauded the efforts of the assembly members, emphasising that the enactment of the bill would significantly curtail governmental expenses and channel resources towards developmental projects within the state.

Upon the governor’s assent, the bill would officially revoke the existing pension law for former governors and deputy governors, thereby marking a definitive shift in governance policies.

The bill’s implementation is slated to take effect immediately, signaling a decisive stance towards fiscal responsibility and prudent resource allocation within Abia State, effective as of Tuesday, March 19, 2024.
