Oil Workers’ Union Strikes Over Breakup Of NNPC

Barely 24 hours after the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, approved the unbundling of the Nigerian National Petroleum corporation (NNPC) into seven entities, some protesting oil workers have shut down the headquarters of the Corporation in Abuja.

The workers are said to be angry at the action by the Nigerian government.

Earlier today, entrances to the Corporation, located in the central business district of the Federal Capital Territory, were shut by the union while workers and other visitors to the company were left stranded outside.

Although there has been no official statement from the union or the company, Daily Sun gathered that the leadership of the workers’ union claimed it was sidelined in discussions that led to the splitting of the Corporation.

There are also reports that the workers are apprehensive of a likely retrenchment of their members if the policy sails through.

The situation has led to fears of fresh fuel scarcity in the country.
