AAC Describes Attack On Sowore In Ekiti As Attempted Assassination, Demands Independent Probe

The party maintained that Sowore was in Ekiti State to participate in and promote the Ikogosi Marathon and was not involved in any political confrontation that could have provoked the attack.

The African Action Congress (AAC) in Ekiti State has described the attack on its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and members of his team at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti as an attempted assassination, rejecting the police account that characterised the incident as an altercation.

The party condemned the incident, which occurred on Friday, October 30, 2026, at Tawakalitu Restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti, saying armed men stormed the premises, attacked Sowore’s delegation, vandalised property and injured members of the team.

In a press statement signed by Netufo Tomide, the AAC South-West Zonal Coordinator and one of the victims of the attack, the party said the circumstances surrounding the assault raised serious concerns about its motive and whether the attackers intended to inflict greater harm.

“Let nobody attempt to reduce this grave incident to an ordinary disagreement or street altercation. Armed men stormed a public place, attacked an unarmed delegation, vandalised property and inflicted injuries on members of the team. The circumstances and apparent coordination of the assault raise serious questions about its motive and whether the intention was to cause even greater harm,” the statement said.

The party maintained that Sowore was in Ekiti State to participate in and promote the Ikogosi Marathon and was not involved in any political confrontation that could have provoked the attack.

“Sowore was in Ekiti to participate in and promote the Ikogosi Marathon, not to provoke anyone or engage in political confrontation. Attacking him under these circumstances is an assault on democratic freedom, political dissent and the safety of every Nigerian,” it added.

The AAC described the incident as an apparent assassination attempt and called for an independent and transparent investigation to identify those responsible, including anyone who may have sponsored or facilitated the attack.

It also urged the Ekiti State Government and the police command not to treat the incident lightly, insisting that all those found culpable must be prosecuted.

“We consider the incident an apparent assassination attempt and demand an independent, transparent investigation to establish those responsible, including anyone who may have sponsored or facilitated the attack.”

“The Ekiti State Government and Police Command must stop treating this matter lightly. Those responsible must be identified and prosecuted,” the statement added.

The party also declared that the attack would not deter Sowore or those involved in his political struggle.

“You can attack a man, but you cannot assassinate an idea. Sowore will not be intimidated, and the struggle for a better Nigeria continues,” it said.
