Some Dearborn Voters Say They Regret Their Trump 2024 Vote

In Dearborn, Michigan — the US city with the largest Arab American community — some voters who cast their ballots for President Donald Trump in the past are rethinking their decisions.

Abdul A., a 24-year-old Arab American student who voted for Trump in 2024, told CNN he plans to vote for Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed this time around. He cited disagreement with the president’s rhetoric and language about the Middle East.

“He had a few promises that we had hoped he would change, but he did not fulfill these promises,” he said of Trump. “He promised that he would bring peace to the Middle East, and he promised better healthcare and better privileges for US citizens … We were expecting our tax dollars to serve us, to help make our everyday life easier, not to be sent overseas.”

The voter said he supports El-Sayed regardless of his ethnicity or religion, because of his platform and promises to “keep our tax dollars for us.”

Walid Fidama, a resident of Dearborn for over 30 years and longtime Democrat, met with the president during a 2024 visit to the city and voted for him. He now regrets his vote.

Fidama told CNN that Trump has “made America worse” and blamed him for the rising cost of healthcare and gas.

“He’s not doing anything from what he promised,” Fidama said, arguing that Trump had promised peace but instead gave the US war.

He’s already cast his vote for El-Sayed in this election, and thinks that the Democratic candidate’s draw in this community is not because of his religion, but because of his political platform.

“He know’s what he’s talking about and he knows what I need,” Fidama said, listing priorities including Medicaid and Medicare, social security, roads and schools.
