All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Oredo Federal Constituency in the 2027 general election, Dr Paddy Iyamu, has pledged to replace campaign materials belonging to his opponent, Hon. Frank Omosigho of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which was destroyed by unknown individuals.
Iyamu, a former Edo State Commissioner for Education, condemned the destruction, describing it as unnecessary and unacceptable in a democratic society.
He made the pledge on Wednesday during a meeting with members of OTUEDO N’OGBENBE (Benin Journalists Forum) in Benin, where he stressed that political competition should not be an excuse for hostility or the destruction of opponents’ campaign materials.
The APC candidate called on politicians and their supporters to embrace issue-based campaigns and allow voters to determine their preferred candidates through the ballot box.
He urged candidates to focus on presenting their achievements, policies and programmes to the electorate rather than engaging in activities capable of heightening political tension.
“Voters should assess political officeholders based on their performance and the impact of their policies on the people. Candidates’ records should also speak for them during elections,” he stated.
Iyamu said his involvement in politics was motivated by a desire to improve the lives of ordinary citizens rather than accumulate wealth, insisting that public office should be used to create opportunities for the less privileged.
Reflecting on his tenure as commissioner for education, he highlighted interventions he said were aimed at improving educational infrastructure and supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Iyamu noted that his foundation had empowered many through free eye surgeries before he ventured into police and expressed confidence in his record, urging the electorate to support his candidacy in the 2027 election.
Iyamu also tasked journalists to use their platforms to promote development by highlighting policies, programmes and projects capable of improving the welfare of the people.
Earlier, the convener of OTUEDO N’OGBENBE, Edosa Okunbor, said the forum was apolitical and committed to promoting the collective interests of Edo South Senatorial District.
Okunbor said the group encouraged sons and daughters of Benin extraction who were making meaningful contributions to the development of the district, irrespective of their political affiliations.
He added that the forum would continue to recognise individuals whose activities and achievements contributed to the progress and welfare of the people of Edo South.
