Pope Leo XIV has successfully undergone surgery to remove a nodule from his lung, with the Vatican confirming that the procedure went as planned.
The operation took place on Tuesday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where the 71-year-old pontiff was admitted earlier in the day.
According to the Vatican, the procedure was completed within the expected timeframe, bringing a positive development for the head of the Catholic Church as attention shifts to his recovery.
The lung nodule was discovered during recent medical examinations, and doctors recommended its removal. However, it remains unclear whether the growth is cancerous, with further medical assessments expected to determine its nature.
The Vatican had earlier indicated that the Pope would remain in hospital for about a week following the procedure.
As messages of support and prayers continue to surround the pontiff, further updates on his condition and recovery are expected.
