Dan Orbih Laid To Rest As Bishop Urges Nigerians To Prepare For Death, Live Purposeful Lives

Funeral mass for Chief Dan Orbih at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Ogbona, on Saturday October 10, 2026.

Chief Daniel Osikheme Orbih, former Chairman of the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, was on Saturday laid to rest in Edo State amid tributes from political leaders, associates and other dignitaries who gathered to honor his memory.

The funeral Mass, held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Ogbona, attracted Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; former Edo State governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole; and other prominent political figures.

At the ceremony, the Catholic Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Dunia, urged Nigerians to reflect on the transient nature of life, stressing that wealth, political influence, academic qualifications and social status could not prevent death.

The bishop called on the congregation to live purposeful lives anchored on truth, righteousness and service to God and humanity, noting that everyone must eventually answer the call of death.

“Death is what all must pay, and one cannot tell God to hold on because we are busy at the moment. Be prepared to answer the call at any time,” he said.

Dunia recalled that Orbih’s parents introduced him to the Catholic faith, noting that the deceased was born, baptized and dedicated in the Church.

Governor Okpebholo, in his tribute, said Orbih’s death had reminded him of life’s uncertainty and the importance of making meaningful contributions to society while alive.

Recalling his previous visit to the church to celebrate the deceased’s birthday, the governor expressed sadness that he had returned to the same venue for the funeral.

He urged Nigerians, particularly those in positions of authority, to embrace selfless service and use their positions to improve the lives of others, adding that worldly achievements could not alter the reality of death.

Wike, who described Orbih as a friend and brother, said seeing the casket had made the reality of his loss more painful, adding that prayers were needed to strengthen the bereaved family.

The minister thanked Okpebholo for supporting the family and paying his last respects to the deceased at his residence in Benin City. He also dismissed suggestions of a disagreement between him and the governor, insisting that their relationship remained cordial.
