UNGA: NBM Demands Action As Children, Youths, Vulnerable Face Global Crisis

The NBM of Africa Worldwide has challenged world leaders attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to confront the worsening humanitarian challenges facing millions across the globe, declaring that protecting children, empowering youths and ending preventable human suffering must move from diplomatic rhetoric to concrete action.

The organisation made the demand as world leaders converged on the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the high-level week of the 81st General Assembly, with the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” The General Debate ran from September 22 to 26, with proceedings continuing on September 28.

In a statement by its President, Dr Charles Chimezie, the NBM warned that the voices of vulnerable populations must not be lost amid the speeches, diplomatic engagements and high-level deliberations of the global gathering.

Chimezie said the credibility of the summit should ultimately be measured not by the eloquence of speeches delivered by world leaders, but by the extent to which decisions taken at the forum translate into safer, more dignified and more hopeful lives for people confronting poverty, conflict, displacement and exclusion.

According to him, millions of children continue to face barriers to education, families are being displaced by conflicts, young people are struggling with limited opportunities, while innocent lives continue to be lost to tragedies that could be prevented through stronger institutions, early intervention and coordinated international action.

He called for a renewed global focus on children and youths, saying their protection and empowerment should remain central to efforts to build peaceful, inclusive and sustainable societies.

The NBM President also challenged the international community to rethink its approach to Africa, insisting that the continent should not remain merely a subject of international discussions but must be recognised as an indispensable partner in shaping solutions to global challenges, including peace, economic justice, sustainable development and humanitarian protection.

Chimezie maintained that no nation or region could claim genuine prosperity while vulnerable citizens remained neglected, stressing that lasting peace would remain difficult to achieve in societies where injustice, exclusion, poverty and hopelessness persist.

He therefore called on the United Nations, national governments and international development partners to translate diplomatic commitments into measurable, sustained and accountable programmes, particularly in the areas of child protection, youth empowerment, peaceful coexistence and humanitarian assistance.

He said the NBM’s philosophy, “I Am My Brother’s Keeper,” represents a universal humanitarian principle that transcends race, nationality, religion and political boundaries, stressing that the suffering of one human being should be treated as a concern for all humanity.

The organisation further urged global leaders to work towards a world where a child’s future is determined by opportunity rather than birthplace, while differences among peoples are transformed into instruments of understanding, cooperation and peaceful coexistence rather than sources of conflict.

Chimezie said history would ultimately judge the present generation not only by the promises made at international forums, but by the courage, resources and determination deployed to confront the suffering experienced by millions across the world.

He urged the 81st UN General Assembly to become a defining moment for renewed international solidarity and shared responsibility, insisting that global leadership must place human dignity, the protection of vulnerable people and practical action at the heart of international cooperation.
