AIG Assures FIDA Of Swift Police Response To Gender-based Violence, Child Abuse Cases

Nigeria’s Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5, Benin City, AIG Monday Agbonika, has assured women and children of improved police response to gender-based violence, domestic violence, sexual abuse and child abuse.

AIG Agbonika gave the assurance when the Edo State Branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), led by its Chairperson, Princess Francisca Elema, visited the Zone 5 Headquarters, Benin City on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The AIG said complaints involving abuse and violence would receive appropriate attention and professional handling by the Police.

The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tijani Momoh, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

But the meeting, he stated went beyond a courtesy call, as FIDA sought a stronger working relationship with the Police to tackle growing challenges confronting women and children.

SP Tijani said that Princess Elema congratulated AIG Agbonika on his promotion and redeployment to Zone 5, saying the visit was aimed at strengthening ties with the Zone’s gender and legal offices.

She said FIDA remained committed to protecting the rights and welfare of women and children, particularly through access to justice and protection from gender-based violence.

The FIDA chairperson called for closer collaboration with the Police in tackling domestic violence, sexual abuse, child abuse and other forms of violence against vulnerable persons.

SP Tijani added that FIDA chairperson also said the organisation was ready to deepen the partnership through legal assistance, public enlightenment, capacity building and improved communication.

Responding, AIG Agbonika commended FIDA for its longstanding advocacy for women and children and its contribution to access to justice.

He assured the delegation that Zone 5 would support lawful initiatives aimed at protecting the fundamental rights of vulnerable persons.

The AIG also urged victims and members of the public to have confidence in the Police and report cases promptly at the nearest division for timely intervention.

The Zonal PRO stated that the meeting ended with both parties expressing optimism that the renewed partnership would strengthen the fight against violence and abuse and advance the protection of women and children in Edo State and beyond.
