FG Tasks Teachers On Improved Basic Education

The Federal Government has charged teachers in the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones to be deliberate about improving the quality of basic education.

Dr Aisha Garba, UBEC Executive Secretary, gave the charge on Monday at the opening of a four-day workshop in Uyo.

Represented by Akpanossom Udoh, UBEC Director, South-South, Garba said that the commission was utilising the Human Capital Opportunity for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE-EDU) to enthrone greater service delivery.

She said that HOPE-EDU, an initiative of the Federal Government, supported by the World Bank would strengthen foundational learning through improved systems, institutional capacity and technical support.

“Education remains the cornerstone of national development, this is why the Federal Government and the World Bank is fully committed to the success of HOPE-EDU.

“The intention is ensure that qualitative outcome is achieved, it demonstrates a shared dedication to the future of the Nigerian child,” she said.

She said that the workshop would equip state ministries of education and SUBEBs with the tools, strategies and accountability mechanisms to transform classrooms.

In her speech, Dr Aisha Abdul, the Programme Manager, HOPE-EDU, said that the scheme was working with other stakeholders to prepare the ground for reforms that would translate into positive outcomes.

“The Structured Pedagogy Package is not just about inputs; it is about outcomes: ensuring that every child has access to quality teaching, effective materials and rigorous evaluation.

“Over the coming days, our teams will guide you through implementation. I urge you to engage fully, ask hard questions and leave with actionable plans,” she said.

Abdul told the participants that the programme required collective commitment to ensure that the foundations being laid would make positive impacts.

Mrs Patience Obasi, the Acting Director, Teacher Development, said that the workshop would drive home the essence of the HOPE-EDU initiatives.

Obasi urged the participants to pay attention to the facilitators, and prepare to take advantage of the lessons for better service delivery.
