Prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members of the University of Delta, Agbor (UNIDEL) have been brought face-to-face with the realities, rules, and responsibilities of national service.
In a comprehensive pre-mobilization briefing held at the institution’s 1000 Capacity Hall, the Deputy Director Corps Certification and Mobilization, South South Area Office, Asaba, Mrs. R.N. Eke delivered an in-depth exposition of the NYSC scheme, tracing its roots to the Nigerian Civil War, and reiterating its core mandate of fostering discipline and national unity among Nigerian youths.
She outlined critical eligibility conditions, stressing that graduates above the age of 30 at the point of graduation would not be mobilized but instead issued Certificates of Exemption.
With precision and urgency, Mrs. Eke directed all prospective corps members to complete their registration online, noting that all official communication from NYSC is conducted through individual dashboards.
She warned that even minor errors in personal data, particularly date of graduation, could trigger serious complications in the mobilization process.
Attention to details, she emphasized, extended beyond forms. Proper dressing for passport photographs is mandatory, as the images will appear on official certificates and remain part of the corps members’ long-term records.
She addressed special categories of corps members such as married women, physically or mentally challenged, HIV patients, pregnant women and nursing mothers. “Married women are advised to serve close to their husbands but must provide valid proof of marriage.”
She further stated that, “Corps members with medical conditions, including mental health disorders or HIV, may be posted closer to their families. Pregnant and nursing mothers are not permitted to stay in camp.”
She urged students not to view teaching assignments with hesitation, reminding them that all corps members were required to actively participate in the Community Development Service (CDS), contributing to sectors such as road safety, environmental protection, drug awareness, health, and gender advocacy.
Reassuring concerns around safety, Mrs. Eke affirmed that NYSC would not deploy corps members to areas lacking adequate security.
She also issued a stern warning against paying for NYSC kits, while encouraging students to acquire practical skills during their service year to boost employability.
Earlier, the Deputy Director, led by the Dean, Students Advisory Services, Dr. Rufus Ijeh, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Eric Eboh, where she intimated the VC on her purpose in UNIDEL.
