Edo State Government has distanced itself from controversial remarks allegedly made by Emmanuel Egogo, Special Assistant to Governor Monday Okpebholo, insisting it does not condone intimidation or suppression of opposition voices.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, who made this known at a press briefing on Monday, said the comments were personal and do not represent the position of the government.
“There is a trending video, but let it be clear that the government does not tolerate thuggery, political intimidation, or any attempt to subdue the opposition,” Afegbua stated.
The controversy followed a viral video in which Egogo was seen addressing the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, in a manner perceived as suggesting possible political interference in security operations.
In the footage, the aide reportedly referenced the shared first name “Monday” between the governor and the police commissioner, implying a close working relationship.
He was also heard pledging loyalty while making remarks about suspected members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including opposition figure Peter Obi, claiming they would be arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Reacting, Afegbua stressed that law enforcement agencies are solely responsible for maintaining order and must operate strictly within the confines of the law.
He added that individuals who make inciting statements should be held accountable in line with extant legal provisions.
The commissioner reiterated that the administration welcomes opposition, describing it as a vital component of democratic governance.
“Opposition helps the ruling party to think better. We support robust and constructive engagement,” he said.
Afegbua dismissed allegations of political intolerance, noting that several opposition figures have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he attributed to the governor’s performance.
He maintained that the government remains focused on promoting unity, security, and development across the state, while urging the media to ensure balanced reportage.
“Those doing bad things should be exposed, but those delivering results should also be acknowledged,” he added.
