Police Arrest Unlicensed Teenage Driver Who Knocked Down 3 Cops At Edo Checkpoint, Warn Against Attacks On Officers

Edo State Police Command said it has arrested a 19-year-old unlicensed reckless teenage driver who recently knocked down three policemen at a checkpoint in Benin City, issuing a stern warning against attacks on police officers.

In a statement released on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command said the incident occurred at the Iyekogba Estate Gate, where the suspect allegedly drove against traffic, breaching a police barricade at high speed.

According to the statement, the suspect made a sudden turn, and drove back towards officers on lawful duty, knocking down three of them.

The police said the suspect later lost control of the vehicle and crashed into several cars before he was apprehended by operatives at the scene.

The injured officers were immediately taken to the hospital where they are currently receiving medical attention.

ASP Ikoedem disclosed that preliminary investigations identified the suspect as Nsikak Okon (male), aged 19, an unlicensed driver.

She added that a black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV, valued at about ₦28m, was recovered from the suspect. The vehicle, which had been in use since May 2024, was found to be unregistered.

Items recovered from the suspect included a substance suspected to be Canadian Loud and a Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid, believed to be diluted refnol also known as Rohypnol.

Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, warned that the Command would not tolerate deliberate attacks on officers on lawful duty, stressing that offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Command reiterated its appeal to motorists to slow down at checkpoints and cooperate with police officers in the interest of public safety.
