Five Worshippers Killed, 35 Injured In Maiduguri Mosque Suicide Bombing

MAIDUGURI – At least five worshippers were killed and 35 others injured on Wednesday evening when a suspected suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) during Magrib prayers at a mosque in the Gamborun area of Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred at about 6:15 p.m. in the Gamborun Market axis, one of the city’s busiest commercial centres.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nahum Daso, told newsmen that the attacker struck while Muslim faithful were observing congregational prayers, leading to instant deaths and multiple casualties.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber who detonated an IED during Magrib prayers. Five persons died on the spot, while 35 others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Daso said.

He added that the injured victims were immediately evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Following the blast, operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, alongside other security agencies, were deployed to the scene to secure the area and conduct checks to rule out the presence of secondary explosive devices.

The area was cordoned off as a joint security team commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.

Daso urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious persons, movements or objects to the nearest security formation.

Gamborun Market is usually crowded during evening prayers, raising concerns over public safety as investigations continue.
