As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary on Thursday, the NBM of Africa Worldwide has called for a renewed national commitment to justice, equity, equality and social inclusion, saying the country’s progress must be measured by the dignity and wellbeing of its citizens.
The Pan-African and humanitarian Organization said Nigeria’s independence anniversary should go beyond ceremonial celebrations to provide an opportunity for sober reflection on the nation’s journey, its challenges and the collective responsibility required to build a more united and prosperous country.
This was contained in a statement issued by the President of the NBM of Africa Worldwide, Dr. Charles Chimezie, and made available to journalists in Benin on Wednesday.
Dr. Chimezie said Nigeria remained a nation of remarkable diversity, resilience and enormous potential, stressing that its different cultures, ethnic groups, languages and traditions should be harnessed as instruments of national unity rather than allowed to become sources of division.
He said the organization’s commitment to social justice, equality, equity and service to humanity was rooted in the conviction that a stronger Nigeria could only emerge where every citizen was treated with dignity, justice was respected and opportunities were accessible irrespective of background.
According to him, the task of rebuilding the country cannot be left to government alone, as institutions, communities and individual citizens all have critical roles to play in strengthening the nation and advancing the common good.
He urged Nigerians to promote peaceful coexistence, responsible citizenship and mutual respect, while calling for a renewed sense of national belonging capable of transcending ethnic, religious and other differences.
Chimezie, who saluted Nigerians at home and in the diaspora for their contributions to national development, said the 66th anniversary should rekindle hope and strengthen the collective resolve to build a Nigeria where justice, peace, human dignity and prosperity are upheld.
He said the NBM of Africa Worldwide would continue to support initiatives that promote humanity, social responsibility and the welfare of vulnerable members of society, wishing Nigeria greater unity, peace and progress as she marks another milestone in her nationhood.
