Edo State Environment Ministry, Correctional Service Pledge Stronger Partnership On Sanitation, Enforcement

The Edo State Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Nosa Adams, Esq., has pledged closer collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, Edo State Command to strengthen environmental sanitation, enforcement and monitoring across the state.

Hon. Adams made the commitment when he received the Controller of Corrections, Edo State Command, CCS Julius Osemwengie, and his team on a courtesy visit to the ministry in Benin City. The visit was aimed at exploring areas of partnership, particularly in environmental sanitation and enforcement.

CCS Osemwengie said the Command was seeking the ministry’s collaboration in participating in the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise held on the last Saturday of every month. He noted that the partnership would enhance efforts to promote environmental cleanliness and compliance, while supporting government’s drive for a healthy and sustainable environment.

The Controller also drew the Commissioner’s attention to a gully erosion site in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area, and appealed to the ministry to extend its intervention efforts to the area.

In response, Hon. Adams disclosed that the ministry had previously undertaken some intervention work at the site, but assured the delegation that officials would return to reassess the situation. He added that the ministry’s enforcement and monitoring department would be assigned to work with the Correctional Service office in Auchi on environmental concerns.

The Commissioner commended the Nigerian Correctional Service for its contributions towards maintaining environmental safety and creating a conducive atmosphere for businesses and residents across the state. He stressed that stronger inter-agency collaboration was critical and assured the delegation of the ministry’s continued partnership.

In a highlight of the visit, CCS Osemwengie presented an award to Commissioner Adams in recognition of his outstanding performance and efficient stewardship in promoting environmental sustainability and delivering environmental initiatives to the people of Edo State.

The award presentation was witnessed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, Mrs. Edith Ebomoyi, other senior officials of the ministry, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, and other high-ranking officers.
