Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending democratic institutions and promoting national unity, saying the country’s democratic gains can only be sustained through responsible leadership, active citizen participation and respect for the rule of law.
In his Democracy Day message to commemorate the June 12, 1993 Presidential election on Friday, the governor described the anniversary as a significant moment for reflection on Nigeria’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made by pro-democracy heroes who fought for the restoration of civil rule.
He noted that the occasion should serve as a reminder that democracy requires constant nurturing and collective commitment from both leaders and citizens.
Reflecting on the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election and the struggle championed by late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other democracy activists, Okpebholo said the lessons of that era remain relevant as Nigeria confronts contemporary political, economic and security challenges.
According to him, democratic governance thrives only when institutions are strong and citizens remain committed to accountability, transparency and civic responsibility.
He stressed that democracy is not merely about elections but about ensuring justice, inclusion and the protection of fundamental rights.
The governor identified insecurity as one of the major obstacles to national development, warning that criminal activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery and cult-related violence continue to undermine public confidence and threaten social stability across the country.
He maintained that lasting peace and security are indispensable for economic growth and sustainable development.
Okpebholo, however, expressed optimism that Nigeria possesses the resilience and capacity to overcome its present difficulties, citing the nation’s history of triumphing over periods of adversity through unity, determination and collective action.
Okpebholo urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and continue supporting efforts aimed at strengthening democratic governance.
As preparations gradually begin for future electoral contests, the governor called for issue-based campaigns, peaceful political engagement and adherence to democratic principles by all stakeholders.
Congratulating Nigerians on the Democracy Day celebration, Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to good governance, security and sustainable development.
He urged citizens across the country to remain united in building a nation where justice prevails, opportunities abound and every Nigerian can live in peace, dignity and hope.
