Edo State Police Command has disclosed plans to arraign Mr. Kelly Okungbowa, popularly known as ‘Ebo Stone’ and a political ally of Governor Monday Okpebholo, over the alleged assault of a police officer on lawful duty.
Okungbowa was arrested by operatives of the command following an incident that reportedly occurred on Saturday evening along the Upper Sakponba Road in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
It was gathered that the suspect allegedly assaulted a police officer who was carrying out lawful duties in the area.
Confirming the arrest on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Edo State Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the suspect was currently in police custody and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
She maintained that no individual is above the law and urged members of the public to accord due respect to police officers in the discharge of their lawful responsibilities.
“Everyone should respect police officers carrying out their lawful duties. No one is above the law,” the police spokesperson stated.
Meanwhile, the President of the Talakawas Rights Group, Comrade Kola Edokpayi, has condemned the alleged assault, describing the incident as unfortunate and unacceptable.
In a statement made available to journalists, Edokpayi commended the officers involved for exhibiting professionalism and restraint despite the alleged provocation, stressing that law enforcement personnel deserve respect and support while carrying out their constitutional duties.
He further argued that given Okungbowa’s influence and connections, any grievance he might have had against the officers should have been channeled through appropriate official channels rather than through a confrontation with armed security personnel.
The rights activist called on members of the public to respect constituted authority and allow security agencies to perform their duties without intimidation or interference.
