More than 35 days after terrorists abducted worshippers during a church service in Eda-Oniyo Community, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, the victims remain in captivity.The state government and security operatives have however remained silent, heightening fears over their safety.
The victims were abducted on April 28, 2026, when suspected bandits attacked Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) during a service in the community.
The attackers reportedly killed the presiding pastor and kidnapped 16 worshippers including children.
According to residents, the kidnappers initially demanded a ₦1billion ransom, which was later reduced to ₦150million and then to ₦50million.
According to sources, over five children were among those abducted.
“For 34 days, these children and others have remained in captivity while their families live in fear, uncertainty, and pain,” a source said.
A resident of the community broke down in tears while speaking to SaharaReporters.
She said not only the families of the victims but the entire community remained confused and deeply disturbed by the prolonged silence from the government and security operatives.
Despite the abduction, the Ekiti State Governor and All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Biodun Oyebanji, has continued his re-election campaign across the 16 local government areas of the state amid funfair.
A check on the Facebook accounts of the governor’s aides showed him meeting different groups to seek support for his re-election while ignoring the families of the victims abducted in the state.
On May 30, the Ekiti government also spent millions of naira to host the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
On May 15, armed men attacked schools in Ahoro Esinele community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, targeting Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School.
During the attack, at least 25 pupils and seven teachers were abducted, while an assistant headmaster was killed and another teacher later died in captivity.
