Wike-backed PDP Faction Turns Up At INEC Stakeholders’ Meeting Amid Leadership Tussle

Leaders of the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), backed by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, on Thursday attended the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) quarterly consultative meeting with political parties.

Present at the meeting were the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed, and the Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

Although INEC has yet to make an official comment on the development, the appearance of the Mohammed-led leadership comes days after a Federal High Court in Ibadan declined to recognise the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the party.

While the Mohammed-led National Working Committee welcomed the judgment, the Turaki-led NWC rejected the ruling and has filed an appeal. Turaki said the party had earlier approached the Ibadan court, seeking an order of mandamus to compel INEC to recognise the leadership produced by its convention, but the court declined the request on the grounds that it would amount to sitting on appeal over courts of coordinate jurisdiction.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, had on December 19, 2025, met leaders of the two rival PDP factions ahead of the February 21 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections, as well as the forthcoming Osun and Ekiti governorship polls.

Also in attendance at Thursday’s meeting were the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Nenadi Usman, and the party’s National Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwokocha. Other participants included the National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yusuf Dantalle, as well as national chairmen and secretaries of other political parties, including Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC).

INEC had earlier on Wednesday met with civil society organisations and media executives as part of preparations for the FCT area council elections scheduled for February 21. The commission is also expected to hold the quarterly meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) on Friday.

A check on INEC’s website still lists Umar Damagun as PDP National Chairman and Anyanwu as National Secretary. For the Labour Party, however, the names of Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha have been updated, with a notation of “court order.”
