In a statement made available to journalists on Saturday February 7th, 2026, by its Chairman, who equally double as an international conflict resolution expert, Comrade Igbotako Nowinta, the organization expressed deep concern over recent actions by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that seek to remove or weaken provisions for real-time electronic transmission of results enshrined in the Electoral Act 2022.
According to NGGRC, the removal of this provision constitutes a serious infringement on Nigerians’ right to good governance and represents a deliberate attempt to create obstacles to free, fair, and credible elections.
The Centre noted that since 1999, persistent electoral malpractice has contributed significantly to poor governance outcomes, including widespread poverty, social neglect, and institutional decay.
The organization rejected arguments that logistical challenges justify the removal of real-time electronic transmission.
It maintained that where technical or logistical issues arise, supplementary manual procedures can be adopted without discarding the core requirement for electronic transmission.
NGGRC therefore demands that election results be compulsorily transmitted electronically in real time from polling units, made publicly accessible, and backed by clear legal provisions to ensure transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
The Centre urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and to continue demanding that this provision be restored and safeguarded, noting that the final wording of the Electoral Act is still subject to harmonization between the Senate and the House of Representatives before it is forwarded to the President for assent.
NGGRC stressed that credible elections are fundamental to democracy and national stability, and that any attempt to weaken electoral safeguards threatens the hopes and democratic rights of millions of Nigerians.
