An announcement by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mr Kamoru Ogunlana, did not provide further details other than that the resumption is to enable lawmakers to take crucial decisions on national matters.
“Consequently, all Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members are kindly requested to take note and reschedule their engagements accordingly to enable them to attend the session, as very crucial decisions shall be taken by each chamber during the session,” the Clerk stated on Sunday.
The lawmakers had earlier suspended plenary to allow them more time to attend to the defence of the 2026 budget proposals by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
Sources close to the legislators said the reconvening may not be unconnected with the 2027 election timetable recently released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Some portions of the election timeline reportedly clash with the Ramadan season in 2027, particularly between 7 and 8 February, when the fasting period is expected to commence.
It will be recalled that immediately INEC released the timetable, many Nigerians, including senators, raised concerns over the clash with Ramadan.
Findings indicate that Tuesday’s reconvening is expected to address the issue through a possible amendment or adjustment of the electoral timetable to ensure that Ramadan does not conflict with the scheduled activities.
