Edo State Police Command has ordered a postmortem as part of efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the alleged removal of vital organs at Akugbe Medical Centre Mortuary in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, last Friday, December 12, 2025.The detained mortician, Mr. Obakpolor Idahosa, 60, will remain in protective custody pending the outcome of the postmortem, according to authorities.
The Public Relations Officer for the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem disclosed this when our correspondent sought an update on the case on Tuesday.

She explained that the postmortem results will help investigators determine whether the corpse was indeed tampered with, as claimed by the deceased’s family.
Meanwhile, our correspondent and investigators from the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), have separately visited the embattled mortuary wing of Akugbe Medical Centre at Upper Sokponoba Road, Benin City.
It was scooped that the mortuary attendant, described as “seasoned with over 30 years practical experience,” may also face charges for disrespect to a corpse due to the unprofessional manner in which the body was handled.
The corpse, identified as that of one Mr. Uyi Enogieru, 45, a commercial tricycle (Keke) rider at Nomayo area and a native of Urhonigbe Community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area, was deposited at the morgue, last October.
The incident reportedly caused pandemonium at Akugbe Medical Centre, Upper Sokponba road, Benin-City when family members allegedly discovered that vital organs such as the heart, eyes, and kidney were missing.
It was gathered that the mortician’s inability to provide a convincing explanation sparked outrage, as mourners attacked the facility.
The violence forced other morticians and hospital staff to abandon their posts, leaving patients on admission and other families who were there to claim bodies of their relatives, stranded.
