Netanyahu: Hamas Will Be Disarmed And Gaza Demilitarised

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu says he hopes to announce the release of hostages being held in Gaza “in coming days”

He says it was diplomatic and military pressure that got us to this point – and adds that Hamas will be disarmed and Gaza demilitarised “the easy way or the hard way”

Netanyahu’s comments come after Hamas agreed to release hostages under a US-proposed peace plan

US President Donald Trump has warned Hamas to “move quickly or else all bets will be off”

Hamas has asked for further negotiations on a number of issues outlined in the plan, while failing to address key aspects of it – including demands for its disarmament and withdrawal from a role in Gaza’s governance

“I feel hope that I can hug my son again”: One mother tells the BBC she feels optimistic but other families of hostages fear the deal could collapse

We can now bring you a few more lines from Netanyahu.

The Israeli prime minister says that it was diplomatic and military pressure that pushed Hamas into freeing the hostages it holds in Gaza.

Netanyahu says he has told Israel’s negotiating team to go to Egypt to finalise the technical details of the hostages’ release.

He goes on to say that the group will be disarmed.

“In the second stage, Hamas will be disarmed and Gaza will be demilitarised – either the easy way or the hard way, but it will be achieved,” he says.
