Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) said this on Monday even as he blasted officials in the FCT, including the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over corruption.
Human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has described the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja as the “Federal Capital of Thieves.”
Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) said this on Monday even as he blasted officials in the FCT, including the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over corruption.
Sowore blasted the Nigeria Police Force over their ridiculous level of incompetence after a police patrol vehicle was stolen from the Force headquarters in Abuja by car thieves.
SaharaReporters reported on Sunday that the Nigeria Police Force announced the theft of one of its official vehicles, a Toyota Buffalo Land Cruiser, from the premises of the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to an internal wireless message from the Commissioner of Police (DFA, Katsina Command) relaying information from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), the vehicle, with chassis number JTELU71JX0B027126 and registration number NPF 5594 D, went missing on July 28, 2025.
The vehicle was attached to the Department of Operations at Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Abuja.
It was reported missing after being removed from the official parking lot.
Police authorities say the case is under active investigation and have directed all area commands, divisional police officers, and formations nationwide to be on the lookout for the missing vehicle.
But addressing journalists and his supporters in Abuja on Monday, Sowore described the incident as emblematic of wider rot in the capital’s administration and criticised the police for what he called incompetence, lax security, ridiculous policing and poor equipment management.
“The Nigerian police are so bad that car thieves can steal police cars in this country.
“They didn’t steal it from the DPO’s office; they stole it from the force headquarters. It is unbelievable, I couldn’t believe it,” Sowore said, underlining his shock that the vehicle was taken from the force headquarters rather than a local station.
Sowore compared the episode to past incidents he described as absurd, saying, “The last time something ridiculous like that happened with the Nigerian police was when the police in Kwara State also arrested a goat for armed robbery. That’s the last time something that ridiculous ever came out of Nigeria.”
He expressed disbelief that a high-value patrol truck could be removed without immediate recovery, and questioned the police’s use of technology in vehicle management.
He said, “But it must break your heart. It sounds funny that car thieves can go to the Nigerian police headquarters and take a patrol car, one of their best, and drive it away.
“And as we are speaking, they are still looking for it. We are not talking about a Lidu; we are talking about a Toyota Buffalo truck, one of the best in the world. What it tells you is that we don’t have people who are competent to do simple things.
“Because there is no way a patrol car should not have a tracking device. Not only would the tracking device be there, the tracking device should be able to disable the car in motion from whatever location they are at. But the reason they don’t put tracking devices on these vehicles is that they don’t use them for policing.”
Speaking on his case with the Nigerian government and the Department of State Services (DSS), Sowore alerted the public that he has been receiving multiple threats in connection with his criticism of FCT officials including the minister but vowed to continue his activism no matter what.
“I’m sure this is not going to be the last time. We are planning other things, including extreme threats against my life, by lawyers over what you guys know has been happening in the FCT,” he said.
“I love to call the FCT the Federal Capital Thieves. But they did it to validate my position that they appointed a team to lead the FCT as a minister.
“So, a lot of threats have been coming my way. But I want to say something that might sound a little bit like a cliché, you know. But it’s the truth.”
Speaking further, Sowore who vowed to lay down his life to free Nigerians from an oppressive government said, “If it will take some of our lives to wake people up in this country, we will gladly contribute to that. If that’s what it needs.
“If our blood is what is needed so that it can sanitise this land, I will give it. So, that’s the reason why I can get out next month. And without regard to all the threats, some of them are even specific.
“This way you should not pass, I will pass the place. Because maybe something needs to happen for everybody to wake up and for them to get Nigeria to where it should be.”
