BENIN CITY – The Edo State Government has launched a campaign to sensitize students, teachers, and community stakeholders on the dangers of human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and drug abuse.
The initiative, held at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA), was organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Mariam Ashley Yusuf Foundation.
It drew participants from schools, parents, unions, Corps Members, and agencies including the Edo State Migration Agency, NAPTIP, IOM, NDLEA, and the Nigeria Police.
Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, who declared the event open, said the programme was in line with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda and underscored government reforms in the sector.
He stressed that education should not only focus on academics but also on raising responsible citizens.
The First Lady’s Office, represented by Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, said the campaign was aimed at empowering children with knowledge and values to resist negative influences.
She warned that human trafficking, sexual abuse, and drug use posed serious threats to the future of young people in Edo.
Founder of the Mariam Ashley Yusuf Foundation, Miss Ashley Yusuf Mariam, called for stronger prevention measures, rehabilitation, and reintegration support for victims. She also unveiled her book, Stolen Dream, which narrates the story of a trafficking survivor.
The programme featured interactive sessions where students engaged with real-life scenarios and explored practical ways to resist exploitation.
Students, represented by Miss Obiageli Ofulue, commended the organisers for giving them the courage and knowledge to make positive life choices.
Stakeholders at the event pledged to spread the campaign across schools and communities, with the Ministry of Education reiterating that combating trafficking, abuse, and drug use requires a whole-of-society approach.
