BENIN CITY – The Edo State Government has partnered with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Society for the Empowerment of Young Persons (SEYP) to train vulnerable groups on entrepreneurial and financial literacy skills.
The six-day intensive training, held at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA), targeted persons with disabilities, survivors of gender-based violence, and petty traders, with participants drawn from Egor, Oredo, Ovia South-West, Ovia North-East, Orhionmwon, Ikpoba-Okha and Uhunwonde local government areas.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Bisi Idaomi, represented by the Director of Women Affairs, Mrs. Florence Nwaozor, urged participants to apply discipline and confidence in implementing the skills acquired.
She said the programme was designed to equip them with practical knowledge to grow businesses, manage finances effectively, and plan strategically.
She reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Okpebholo to empower marginalized and vulnerable groups, noting that such initiatives form part of a broader agenda to build a prosperous and equitable Edo State.
GIZ Adviser for Employment Promotion and Migration, Mr. Joel Zombou, lauded the creativity of participants and emphasized that entrepreneurship must go beyond profit-making to creating value and contributing to community development.
Executive Director of SEYP, Omo-Ero Victoria, lectured on idea generation, prototyping, marketing, customer relationships, and financial literacy, stressing the importance of budgeting, saving, and risk management. Participants engaged in practical sessions, including group activities, storytelling, and psychosocial games.
One of the beneficiaries, Mercy Omodia, described the programme as “interesting, motivating, educative, and informative,” praising the hands-on aspect of the training which encouraged collaboration and creativity.
