House Oversight Chair James Comer praised President Donald Trump for placing Washington, DC, police under federal control and said he plans to follow up with a hearing with city officials when lawmakers return to Washington.

The committee confirmed Monday it had received notification from the White House about the president’s federal takeover of DC police.
Comer said the committee will hold a congressional hearing in September with DC District Attorney General Brian Schwalb, DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and Mayor Muriel Bowser. Lawmakers are currently in their home districts for Congress’ August recess.
The panel, Comer said, “is also advancing legislative solutions to protect Americans in their capital city.”
For context: Trump can retain control of the city’s police department for a longer period if he notifies the chairs and ranking members of the congressional committees that handle legislative matters related to Washington, DC, including the House Committee on Oversight and Reform and the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Any request of over 30 days must be passed into law.
