Edo: Iguelegbon Community Battles Landgrabbers, Seeks Govt’s Intervention To Preserve Ancestral Property

By Eben Enasco

Iguelegbon Community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State is taking a stand against what they alleged is illegal sales of some plots by Dr. Taiwo Aifuwa to real estate operators.

The disputed land in question spans approximately 400 plots, claimed by the people to be rightfully owned by the Iguelegbon Community.

At a gathering in Benin City on Wednesday last week, members of the community, and concerned Edo youths led by Comrade Joseph Gbale questioned the rationale behind selling without due consultation with the community leadership.

He accused the former Chairman of the Proscribed Community Development Association Authority (CDA), Dr. Taiwo Aifuwa of Selling over 400 plots of land against the wish of the community to one LUMCAS RECTOR AND PROPERTY DEVELOPERS.

According to Gbale, “just recently one Dr. Taiwo Aifuwa had the Temerity purportedly claiming to have sold a whooping 400 plots of land belonging to the community to a real estate company without due consultation from the elders and youths of Iguelegbon. This is not only disheartening, it is disgusting and something that must be pooped by all compos mentis homo sapiens”

While calling on the State Government and the Revered Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II, to implement the private property protection law to curb this resurgence, he alleged that Dr. Aifuwa is using the proceeds to intimidate, and arrest anyone who speaks against his exploits despite the expiration of his tenure as the Okaighele, years ago.

He argued that they have confidence in the committee set up by the palace headed by Chief Osaro Idah in delivering justice despite pockets of allegations that millions of naira were paid to pervert justice. Despite these claims, it has not been substantiated by either of the factions.

On his part, the Secretary of the Community, Imade Daniel, said the expansive property holds significant cultural, historical, and economic value to the community, and its preservation is crucial to their identity and well-being.

He warned these individuals to desist from their activities, citing the importance of preserving their ancestral land.

The community leader is urging the commissioner of Police to urgently arrest Dr. Aifuwa to halt further escalation, adding that no part of the community land will be ceded without proper documentation.

He argued that these activities are not only illegal but also threaten the community’s identity and way of life.

Meanwhile, several attempts were made to reach Dr. Taiwo Aifuwa to respond to the accusation, but to no avail.
