Oba Of Benin Confers First Chieftaincy Title After Mom’s Funeral Rites

Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, a former royal scepter bearer to the transited Oba Erediauwa of Benin Kingdom, has been honored with the Akenuwa of Benin Chieftaincy title by His royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin.

The humility personified high ranking Chief Akenuwa, was a member of Iweguae in Eghaevbo N’ Ogbe Royal Guild in Benin Kingdom, was recognized for his courage, passion and dedication to service in Benin Kingdom.

It is the first Chieftaincy title that is being awarded by Oba Ewuare II to any individual since the conclusion of his beloved mother, Iyoba Omo N’Ikuoyemwen, Iyoba Ewuare funeral rites a few months ago.

Before his elevation, Chief Akenuwa, played a significant role during Iyoba Ewuare’s funeral — a rare insight into how people, and dynasty have transformed over the past Centuries in Benin — with unique culture and tradition.

Oba Ewuare II, who was joined by his Chiefs and other Palace functionaries, received Chief Akenuwa at the weekend in his Palace during the performance of Ekpomwen-abor rite.

Ekpomwen-abor is a ceremony of appreciation after conferment of Chieftaincy title at Ugha Ozolua axis in Oba Palace in Benin City.

Senior Palace Chiefs, Adanegbe Igbinoba, the Eribo of Benin and Osaro Idah, conveyed the best wishes of the Oba to Chief Akenuwa, who danced joyfully to the admiration of the Oba during the ceremony.

Family, friends and well-wishers of Chief Akenuwa, including worshippers at Holy Aruosa Cathedral led by the presiding Priest in the church, Ohen-Osa Edebiri Igbinoghodua, were present during the brief outdoor ceremony.

On his part, Chief Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, thanked Oba Ewuare II for keeping Benin monarchy apace – and promised not to let down the confidence reposed in him to serve the Oba.

Chief Akenuwa fondly called Oziya, prayed Almighty God and his ancestors to guide him through this uphill task, ahead of his visit to some Pilgrimage sites in Benin Kingdom.

He said, “A Chief is a disciple of the Oba of Benin”, noting that Chieftaincy title in Benin is not just bestowed on anyone. It’s complimented by hard work and diligence”.
