The Esogban I know; Oshiomhole Extols Virtues Of Great Benin Chief

BY MIKE OSAROGIAGBON

Benin City, Edo, Nigeria – Former governor of Edo State and senator representing Edo North Senatorial district, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has revealed some unique character of the Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri who passed on at the age of 93, last month.

Comrade Oshiomhole said that Esogban was one of the few consistent Nigerians who will never go halfway in what they believe in.

The Senator said this when he paid a condolence visit to the family of the Esogban in Benin  City, today.

“He was consistent, usually people of that age will pray for whoever comes to give them kola, they will pray for 10 people, but Esogban will only pray for the one he believes in. It is not what you give to him, he will even ask them to give you a gift before you sit down.

“As governor of this state, he told me many things that gave me information that helped me to take some of the decisions that many people thought were impossible,” Oshiomhole stated.

The former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) recalled the advice that the Esogban thought he (Oshiomhole) made some wrong decisions which eventually came to pass.

“Suffice it to say that, the fact that a son made a mistake or error of judgement, my father the late Esogban never disowned me, he only asked me to learn from it and assured me that no matter the consequences I might face as a result of my poor judgement or mis-placement of trust, and like a ball, when it bounced down it can still rise again,” Senator Oshiomhole said.

Also, the Executive Director, Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Rev. David Ugolor and his friend Engineer Mike Osho have described late Esogban as a man of many parts who  affected many people including them.

The duo made the remarks during a condolence visit to the family of Esogban in Benin City.

“He has not only used the opportunity of staying here on earth to remind humanity of how we should all work together, but show love to each other,” Rev. Ugolor said.

The Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri joined his ancestors on July 20, 2023.

High point of the visit was presentation of gift by the family through Senator Adams Oshiomhole to president Bola Tinubu.
