Edo First Lady Urges Good Sportsmanship, As BOWFT Kicks Off In Benin

Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, has declared open the Betsy Obaseki Women Football tournament at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

The competition, with the theme, “Promoting the Girl Child,” is aimed at harnessing sporting talents in the state and tackling the scourge of irregular migration among teenage girls.

While declaring the tournament open, Mrs. Obaseki said, “it is my pleasure to welcome you to the maiden edition of the Betsy Obaseki Women Tournament, which is being hosted in Benin City, Edo State. I hereby declare the tournament open.”

She said the tournament is living up to its aim of exposing both professionals and those in the lower league to the same platform for the development of women’s football.

Dignitaries at the opening ceremony include Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki; Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu and his wife, Mrs. Maryann; Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Marcus Onobun; Edo State Acting Chief Judge, Justice Joe Acha; Special Adviser to President Muhamadu Buhari on Sports, Daniel Amokachi; as well as officials of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
