Delta Judge Recommends In-depth Investigations Of Pre-marital Relationships To Stem High Divorce Rate

By Margaret Okoh

Delta State Chief Judge, Justice Marshal Umukoro has seriously frowned at the high rate of divorce amongst married People in the defunct Bendel State, now Edo and Delta  States, Nigeria which he blamed for the rising and uncontrollable social decay especially hardened criminal activities.
Justice Umukoro spoke when he inspected Federal Correctional Center or Prisons on a familiarization tour at Agbor, Ika South  local Government Area, Delta State.

The Chief Judge who disclosed that between middle of last year and the end, about one hundred and fifty six divorce  cases were recorded in Delta State alone, implored those seeking divorce to shield their swords in the interests of their children  and the larger society.

At the end of the familiarization tour a sizeable number of inmates who were  unlawfully detained and those whose detention periods have  exceeded their terms of incarceration on conviction were freed and asked to return home .

In his comments, a Benin-based legal practitioner,  Mr. Peter O. Atimomo Esq.  said it was highly condemnable that escalating divorce syndrome in Edo state is  now  being assumed as a social norm whereas the practice has dire consequences on the general development indices in the Midwest region.

Aitimon observed that Marriage, as ordained by God as an institution goes beyond the ordinary and must be protected by all.

He asked Parents and Guardians to sit up and properly monitor the relationships of their children and wards to ensure that they do not  fall into wrong hands or truants.
