Twenty-year-old student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has allegedly committed suicide after she was attacked and raped while returning to her hostel at Ekosodin Community, near Ugbowo Compus, Benin City.
The attack and rape were said to have happened last year, leaving her emotionally and psychologically devastated.
The victim, Christabel Omore Buoro Owoicho 20, a 300-level student of the department of Medical Laboratory Science, UNIBEN, allegedly injected a deadly substance (Snipper) to end her life, on Tuesday, June 18, 2019.
Her lifeless body was discovered in her hostel flat at Plot 4 Uwaifo lane, off Newton street, Ekosodin, behind the University fence.
She was said to have locked herself indoor after her roommate left the hostel, increased the volume of her music, left a note and committed the act.
It was the second and last attempted sucide that finally took her life, according to sources close to her.
Below is excerpt from the suicide note allegedly left by the deceased for her roommate, one Folakemi Ruth Julius and her half sister Angela Owoicho stated, respectively:
“Folakemi Ruth Julius! I don’t believe you are happy. True love bring joy and peace,……. you are trying to be happy, but I don’t believe you. End it real. Joy is contagious”.
“Angela Owoicho! Babe I want you to stop. And you know what I am talking about. You have so much potentials, you are ruining you life with it. I love you…. so don’t forget”.
Her roommate Folakemi, and one Ben Bamiyi who identified himself as the deceased uncle described her as an introvert.
They disclosed that the undergraduate attempted suicide after rape last year as her friends and well-wishers had been providing emotional and psychological supports to enable her overcome the sad experience.
“She took 24 tablets of Paracetamol and some sleeping tablets just to kill herself last year but was rushed to UBTH where she was resuscitated.
“She had never had a boyfriend in her entire life. Christabel was exceptionally brilliant”. Her roommate and uncle maintained.
Christabel, described as a devoted Christian of Benue State father and Edo State mother was said to have taken the Snipper from her friend’s kitchen after confirming that it is rat poison.
She was said to be a virgin before her encounter with the rapist whom she did not know before she allegedly killed herself.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer for Edo State Police Command DSP Chidi Nwabuzor said operatives of Ugbowo Police Division had a destress call and went to the hostel to evacuate the corpse.
He said no arrest had been made as investigation had begun.
“Investigators said the suicide note was incoherent. Professionals will examine the body to ascertain whether she was a psychiatric patient”. DSP Nwabuzor said.
Contacted, the university Public Relations Officer Mr Michael Osasuyi said that the institution was waiting for a detailed briefing concerning what really happened since the incident did not happened within the school premises.
