Association Of The Blind Calls For Free Education, Establishment Of Commission On Disability Matters

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigerian association of the blind, Edo state chapter has appealed to the state government to make the education for the blind absolutely free, including books, tuition, and boarding fees, as it is obtainable in some neighboring states.

The State chairman of the association, Mr Nosakhare Osemwota made the appeal during the 2018 white cane day celebration held yesterday, in Benin City.

They also called on the state government to set up a rehabilitation center for the blind where they can learn handicraft, so as to be equipped for the challenges in the society.

Nosakhare said: ” We appeal to the state government to make the school for the blind at Ivbiore, Benin City a boarding school to enable blind pupils from other local government areas in Edo state to have a good basic education. Provisions should also be made to accommodate blind students in Ihogbe College Benin City.

“We beseech the state government to set up a Commission on Disability Matters that will see to the welfare of the physically challenged in the state

“As we celebrate the White Cane Day, we appeal to the state government and other corporate bodies to make the White Cane available in the state at a subsidized rate. ”

The association used the opportunity to remind the state governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki of his promise to give bursary award to students of Edo State origin in institutions of higher learning across the country.
