Trouble Brews In Edo As Civil Society Plans To Shut Down Benin Electricity Company

Benin City, Nigeria – Trouble is seriously brewing in Edo State as Edo Civil Society Organizations plans a shutdown protest on Monday August 7, 2017 against the beleaguered Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), accused of unfair business activities in the state.

The organization has designated Museum Ground, King Square, Benin City, Edo State as take off Point, beginning at 6:30am with the instruction that participants dress in BLACK TOP (“Time to mourn the death of BEDC”).

Edo Civil Society Organisations, a conglomeration of several civil and human rights groups in the state is calling on all comrades and Edo people in general to come out en-mass to support the implementation of the plan.
In a statement issued in Benin on Wednesday and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Comrade Osazee Edigin, the organization accused BEDC of bad business practice of ineffective services and tendentious behavior of unleashing brutality on customers with the use of military personnel.

Dear Comrades and Edo people, we have had more than enough of the unfair business activities of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company in the way and manner they deal with our people ranging from:

* The use of white men that commands the military to brutalize their customers

* The issuance of outrageous and estimate bills

* Indiscriminate disconnections of customers without due process

* Disrespect for customers

* High handedness

* Refusal to supply meters to households

* Unprecedented wickedness in the highest order

* The refusal and intimidation of Mr. Innocent Okpara who was brutalized by the military at the order of a white man working with BEDC recently.

–Among other atrocities perpetuated by the management of BEDC against Edo people.

We want to use this medium to invite all citizens to join forces with EDO CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS to send BEDC packing, we cannot afford to be slaves in our land. BEDC is not ready to do business in Edo state hence immediate past governor of Edo, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole threatened to revoke their C of O then.
