Benin City, Nigeria – Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), has expressed sadness and grief at the senseless and dastardly assassination of a prominent and frontline Human Rights Defender, Ken Atsuwete, and called on the Nigerian Government to as a matter of urgency fish out and bring the killers to book.

Ken Atsuwete was the Executive Director of Human Rights Alliance in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

An Itsekiri-born human rights defender and advocate, he championed the cause of the downtrodden and defenseless, and was in the trenches for freedom and liberty when he was recently cut down.

This expression of grief was made by Rev David Ugolor, ANEEJ Executive Director just immediately after the assassination of Ken Atsuwete in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

“Even though we are saddened at the martyrdom of our friend and colleague, ANEEJ and the Human Rights Community will remain focused, undaunted and continue to vigorously pursue the purpose and vision for which Ken Atsuwete lived and died.

“Ken Atsuwete was indefatigable and committed to the struggle for Ubuntu in Rivers state and Nigeria in general,” the Rev David Ugolor remarked.

“ANEEJ therefore calls on the Federal Government to deploy with post-haste speed, the full weight of its men and apparatus of the Police High Command and set up an independent and high-powered panel to unravel the circumstances leading to the assassination of Ken Atsuwete, so as to bring the perpetrators of this dastardly to book.

“Rest in Peace, Ken Atsuwete, champion and defender of the Rights of humanity.”
