Edo Civil Society Ready For Showdown With Benin Electricity Distribution Company

Members of Edo Civil Society Organizations are are ready for a showdown with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) over unresolved issues bordering on allegations of arrest and detention, using the Police, incompetence, disobedience of court order against tariff increase, poor service, among others.

A massive protest by the organizations has been slated for Tuesday February 14, 2017 beginning at 7:am, with a designated take-off point being the Museum ground, King’s Square, Benin City, Edo State.

“Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) MUST GO,” the organizations said in a statement released on Wednesday by their Public Relations Officer, Comrade Osazee Edigin.

The organizations are calling on the general public, communities, interest groups, professional bodies, religious bodies, civil societies/NGOs, manufacturers, etc. to join the protest, tagged ‘FINAL HIT’ on the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC)over the following, which they described as offences against the people:

1. Arresting and sending people to jail using the police and the court. (over 200 people in the prisons currently)
2. Disobedience to Court Order not to increase tariff yet they go to same court to send people to jail.
3. Estimated Billings
4. Lack of competence to manage electricity sector
5. Collecting our money for DARKNESS
6. Wickedness of Funke Osibudu, the Managing Director of BEDC
7. Refusal to supply meters

The organization further said:

Inform everybody you know, high profile personalities in the society will be part of this movement.

DON’T WAIT FOR OTHERS TO DO IT WHILE YOU ENJOY THE BENEFIT. WE WILL NOT ALLOW THIS TO CONTINUE.

A purse has been designated for the success of this struggle, we all are expected to contribute to this, a lot of things will be required to carry out this massive protest, it is the voice of the people at work.
