Benin City, Nigeria – Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) has applauded the timely and bold decision of the authorities of Delta State University, Abraka Delta State, sacking six of its lecturers over their alleged involvement in several offences including sexual harassment of female students.

Gender and Environment program officer of the organization and coordinator of its RAPEWATCH program, Ms. Sandra Eguagie made the remark at an interactive session with journalists in Benin City during the week.

According to her, the increasing rate of sexual harassment in tertiary institutions has become increasingly worrisome.

“We consider the termination of the six randy lectures by the authorities of DELSU a wake-up call on well-meaning persons to speak out against an evil wind blowing like wildfire in Nigeria.

“Education is essential to growth and development, rape becomes an abuse of power and fuels sexual harassment in the educational sector. It jeopardizes a country’s social, economic and political future”, Eguagie posited.

She further used the opportunity to drum up support for the sexual harassment bill currently before the Senate and called for its speedy passage into law.

“We want other tertiary institutions in Nigeria to emulate the DELSU authorities’ example and strengthen their internal control mechanisms and structures so as to effectively check the rape menace.

“Heads of primary and, secondary educational institutions should equally take a cue so as to drastically reduce the rape menace in our educational system in Nigeria,” Eguagie said.

“ANEEJ applauds the courage of the Delta State University for setting the pace with a decisive decision to dismiss the wayward university lecturers and also for having a list of dismissed staff for various offences on their website and expects that this would be a deterrent to others in the institution.” Eguagie emphasised.
